Defensible Space Services & Zone Guide in San Diego County

Understand the basic Zone 0, Zone 1 and Zone 2 guidance used in unincorporated San Diego County, then request a connection with a local provider for vegetation management and defensible-space work.

What is defensible space?

Updated September 2026.

Defensible space is the managed area around a building where combustible material and vegetation are reduced to help slow wildfire spread and reduce exposure to embers, flame and heat. It complements structural wildfire home hardening, which focuses on the building itself.

Local-rule note: The zone summary below reflects San Diego County’s published basic rules for property in the unincorporated area. The County also notes that individual fire districts can have their own requirements. Confirm the rules that apply to your address before beginning major vegetation-removal work.

San Diego defensible-space zones

Zone 0, Zone 1 and Zone 2

0

Zone 0: 0–5 feet

The area immediately next to walls, porches, patios and decks. San Diego County’s basic guidance calls for hardscape such as concrete or brick, no combustible material and no firewood in this zone.

Zone 1: 5–50 feet

The County calls for low-growth, fire-resistant and irrigated planting, with dead or dying vegetation removed. Its published basics also place firewood away from buildings and property lines.

Zone 2: 50–100 feet

This outer zone continues fuel reduction. County guidance includes removing dead or dying vegetation, managing tree branches and keeping grasses cut to a maximum of four inches.

Two complementary strategies

Defensible space vs. home hardening

Defensible space

Focuses on the area around the structure: vegetation, debris, firewood, mulch and other combustible material that can contribute to wildfire exposure.

Home hardening

Focuses on the structure itself: vents, roof edges, eaves and soffits, gutters, siding, windows, doors and other places where embers, flame or heat may affect the building.

Defensible-space FAQs

Common questions from San Diego homeowners

Is defensible space always 100 feet?

San Diego County’s published basic rules for unincorporated areas describe zones extending from the structure out to 100 feet. Property boundaries and local fire-district rules can affect what applies to a specific property, so verify the requirements for your address.

Is Zone 0 the same as home hardening?

No. Zone 0 addresses the immediate area around the structure, while home hardening addresses the building itself. They work together but involve different types of improvements.

Can the same company do vegetation work and structural upgrades?

Sometimes, but not always. Landscaping, tree work and debris removal can require different providers from construction work such as vents, eaves or roofing.

Where can I check the official San Diego County rules?

Use San Diego County’s official defensible-space page and confirm any additional requirements with the fire district or local jurisdiction that serves your property.
